Ticket system for public transport in Prague
Prague's public transport system offers several types of tickets to cater to different travel needs. You can choose from short-term tickets for 30-minute, 90-minute, 24-hours, and 72-hours. These tickets are valid for all modes of public transport within Prague.
Here are the costs of some common tickets:
- 30-minute ticket: 30 CZK
- 90-minute ticket: 40 CZK
- 24-hour ticket: 120 CZK
- 72-hour ticket: 330 CZK
- (1 EUR ≈ 24-25 CZK)
Tickets are available for purchase at yellow ticket vending machines found at the airport bus stop, metro stations, and selected tram and bus stops (card payments accepted). Additionally, convenience stores and newspaper kiosks offer ticket sales (mostly accepting card payments, but not always). All trams and buses are equipped with orange onboard vending machines, accepting contactless payment with Visa/Mastercard for 30-minute, 90-minute, and 24-hour tickets. Alternatively, tickets can be bought through mobile apps or online at www.dpp.cz
The ticket system is organized into zones, and the basic Zone P includes the whole city, including the airport. The outer zones mainly cater to long-distance commuters, but the basic P-zone is sufficient for general city travel. Map of the zones you can find here.
To use your ticket:
- Ensure that you validate it when boarding trams, buses, or entering the metro station. Look for the yellow ticket validation machines located in trams and buses or at metro entrances. At the airport bus stop, validators are also available at the bus stop to expedite passenger boarding.
- Once validated, the ticket remains valid for the specified duration (e.g., 30 minutes or 24 hours). Tickets purchased onboard trams and buses with contactless payment are immediately valid from the time of purchase.
All tickets permit unlimited transfers within their validity period, allowing you to switch seamlessly between trams, buses, the metro, Vltava River ferries, and the Petrin Hill funicular as needed.
Money exchange
The currency in the Czech Republic is Czech Crona (CZK) with an exchange rate: 1 EUR ≈ 24-25 CZK.
We highly recommend against exchanging money at the airport or using "touristic" non-banking ATMs due to their unfavourable exchange rates and high ATM charges. Instead, it is much better to utilize exchange offices in the city centre or the standard ATMs of reputable banks. Additionally, you will find that contactless payment is widely accepted and convenient at most places throughout the city.
